Introducing cellulitis:

Cellulitis is caused when an exposed area, cause due to damaged peripheral skin is utilised by bacteria to cause an infection. Cellulitis of leg is the most thought about infections today. The under lying tissue layers get severely inflamed by such infection. Hence the main objective in such cases is to take control of the inflammation and also take charge in such a way so that such types of infections are later not repeated. But this type of infection should not be confused with contagious diseases because it is not spread by mere touch or contact.
The main culprits behind the cause of this cellulitis are the bacteria streptococcus, staphylococcus but even Clostridium, Hemophilus influenza; Pneumococcus is capable of causing it.

Causes behind the infection:

As stated earlier, cellulitis, that affects the interior tissues of the skin are spread when the bacteria gets into the body through damaged skins. It might be spread through many other causes such as:

• Cracks developed in feet are most vulnerable to cellulitis of leg.
• In some cases where the immunity power of a person is supressed due to side effects of some medicines.
• In other cases, some ulcers lead to the formation of such infection.
• Infections from operation theatre are also a major concern in this case.
• Also genetic history of any vascular diseases might be a cause.

Symptoms to diagnose cellulitis:

Symptoms of cellulitis of leg include skin sore, reddening and tightening of the skin around the affected area, headache. These are the symptoms around the skin itself while other symptoms include headache, fatigue, fever with chills in some cases, nausea etc. whenever you see an allergy like reaction in and around your leg, be sure to check with your family physician.

Treatment: severe:

Cellulitis can be mild and the severe type. It is the severe type of cellulitis of leg that is a cause of great concern because it is in this case that the infection if not treated at an early stage might come in contact with the blood stream and thereby with the help of the liquid medium will infect the whole of the body. Usually when the fever is continuously repeated with vomiting, higher doses of amoxicillin is given directly into the veins with doses of phenoxymethylpenicillin which is given orally. Another method of treating the infection is hyperbaric oxygen but the previously mentioned methods are more widely used.

Mild cellulitis:

And if the patient is diagnosed with mild cellulitis of leg, the cause of worry is decreased to a lower level. In this case the patient is treated with a course of anti-biotic for a period of 7-8 days. Dicolaxcillin, flucloxacillin are the commonly used anti-biotic used in such cases accompanied by pain killers to reduce the unnerving pain that comes with the infection. All doctors prescribe at least two weeks of complete bed rest in case of being affected by the infection, for the complete recovery from the infection.

And finally…

If you are diagnosed with this infection, maintenance of proper hygiene is the only way to stop it from recurring. Because of such infections occurring to the leg area, has a tendency to re-occur from the cracks if not properly taken care of. Also cellulitis of leg affected should be isolated and separately treated so that the infection is not spread to other parts of the body.
