What is cellulitis?

Cellulitis may be defined an s a bacterial infection that occurs beneath the dermal layer. Therefore this disease does not occur in the superficial layers of the skin but rather is present in the deeper layers of the skin and the subcutaneous tissues. It is essentially caused by the bacteria: staphylococcus and streptococcus. Cellulitis is a fairly common disease and it affects a lot of people across all races and age groups.

What are the Signs, symptoms and care?

Signs and symptoms of cellulitis include occurrence of tenderness in a small area of the skin and swelling of that region. Sometimes there is a redness which may spread to the adjacent layers of skin also. This area that is affected may enlarge and thus the infected person may also develop fever. The lymph glands may also swell at times and this symptom is known as the swollen gland symptom. However sometimes people may also develop red patches around their lower leg area and this is caused due to the lower circulation of blood and not due to the occurrence of cellulitis.

Since cellulitis is a bacterial infection the best medicine genre to consider for the process of cure is antibiotics. Penicillin and different other types of antibiotics are really useful to this type of allergy. Sometime the treatment process may also require administering the antibiotic type of drugs intravenously if the penetration level of the antibiotic cream is not very adequate to cure the disease fully. The choice of the type of the treatment is generally made depending on the area of infection and the extent of the bacterial infiltration. Also the overall health and age of the patient is also taken into consideration.
